Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978), son of the famous painter Charles P. Gruppe, was born in Rochester, New York in 1896.  He was an American Impressionist painter known for his paintings of fishing boats docked at Gloucester and Rockport village scenes.  He was the founder of the Gruppe Summer School, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, 1942.  His prolific career brought him many awards and memberships.  His popular painting "Winter, Vermont" (date and location unknown) won the Richard Mitton Award at the Jordan Marsh Exhibition in Boston in 1943.
